My Favorite Teaching Moment

I love to help students think outside the box. I like to show them that it's not just about music or math or physical ed—it is about overwhelming circumstances (which happen on a daily basis when you're in middle school) that give students life skills they will use for the rest of their lives! It was during my second year of teaching that I invited an eighth grade boy to join County Chorus rehearsals. He was not even in the school chorus, his brother was in jail for drugs, and his confidence level was low. He went to the County Chorus Festival in March of 1987, and it seriously changed his life, and mine. He enjoyed vocal music for many years, even through college, and it changed my life because I realized I needed to reach ALL students, not just the ones in the music and theater clicks. It was profound and still inspires me today; it’s a reminder that everyone needs a chance!

I really enjoy inspiring others to reach higher and be better than they were yesterday. It pushes me to better myself as well, to be a role model of energy, motivation, and encouragement to everyone I meet.
