Going Beyond the Grades: Increasing Student Motivation and Engagement through Classroom Assessments

Session: 8/8/2012 1:00-4:15

Effective classroom assessments will enable K-12 leaders and educators to increase student achievement by integrating student-involved classroom assessments with day-to-day instruction. Educators will quickly learn to apply these techniques in working with students, aligning formative and summative assessments, setting clear goals linked to Common Core and Essential Standards, and continuously assessing progress toward those goals. This presentation will provide participants the key to success in meeting the needs of all learners.

Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships in Today’s Classrooms

This presentation will focus on the sophisticated skills and habits of mind students need to be successful in post-secondary education, the world of work, and life in general. This session demonstrates the importance of integrating rigor, relevance, and relationships into classroom practice in order to provide these skills and improve achievement throughout the K-12 system. Educators will develop a deeper understanding of how to create learning experiences that focus on engaging learners’ creativity and innovation through project-based learning events.

Success Reading Strategies across the Curriculum

Session: 8/9/2012 1:00-4:15

Reading Comprehension is crucial to student survival and academic achievement. Most teachers are not equipped with the strategies to help students raise their reading proficiency when reading informational texts. Participants will discover strategies to assist students in reading and understanding informational text, without sacrificing time on their own content standards. In using research-based reading strategies before, during and after reading, teachers will discover that students have a deeper understanding of the text as well as the ability to communicate their understanding through speaking and writing. These strategies ensure that all students have the opportunity to be successful in today’s classrooms.
